Obituary for Dale Keith Burnell

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dale Burnell on August 5, 2019, after a battle with cancer. He died at home in the country, in the house that he lovingly built. He leaves behind his wife Ellen, children; Melanie (Jae Cheol), Jamie, Luke and granddaughter Sabine. He will be remembered lovingly by his brother, Martin, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers in-law, and many friends both here and in Florida. Dale loved his career in education. He was kind, fun, and always ready to help out. The world is better place because of him. Please join us for a celebration of Dale’s life on August 18, at 2:00pm at the Lion’s Hall in Perth.

Dale was born in London, England on July 20, 1949. His childhood was full of love and family. His brothers Chris and Martin were his best friends growing up. His mum and dad gave their boys a wonderful childhood.

In 1961, at the age of 12, the family came to Canada to give Dale and his brothers every opportunity for the future.

Dale and Ellen met in High School in grade 11 and have been together ever since. They went to Teacher’s College together and then York University, where Dale completed a degree in Political Science.
Dale and Ellen married in 1970, and then along with good friends, Mike and Wendy, bought the farm. They shared many wonderful adventures together there.
Dale loved his life in the country, living his dream of building a beautiful home, gardens and countless projects. He enjoyed the outdoors and his time as a hobby farmer.
Dale felt privileged to have enjoyed a wonderful career as a teacher and as a principal. He taught everything from kindergarten to special education in high school. A highlight of his career was starting the Alternate High School Program. Later, after retirement, he mentored and helped find placements for Graduate Students going through Teacher Education in SUNY.
Dale’s three children, Melanie, Jamie, Luke and granddaughter Sabine were the joys of his life. He was so proud of them all and their many accomplishments.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His friends meant the world to him and he loved them like family. He was always cheerful and helpful with everyone he met.

After retirement he enjoyed travelling and spending winter months in Florida with good friends, playing golf and pickleball.

Dale lived his life to the fullest. He was always positive, enjoyed a good sense of humour, even through his struggles with health issues over the past year.

This quote best describes Dale’s life:
“Make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it.”
By Edward Bok, of Bok Towers, Florida.
He fulfilled that sentiment to the fullest, making us all richer for having had him in our lives. He is greatly missed.
